In Year 5 we made some of our own greek pottery using balloons covered in paper mache. To create the pots we needed to follow these instructions:
1) Blow up a balloon then cover it all over in paper mache (bits of newspaper/paper soaked in a mixture of watery glue). Do some more several layers on top of this one to make it stronger. Allow to dry.
2) Cut the top of the balloon and the baloon will pop with very little sound. Turn the balloon shape upside down and take the balloon out from the inside.
3) Prepare an orange card cut lengthways and roll it in a cylinder with the top and bottom open. If it looks too big, fold and cut some more (still lengthways). Then tape your cylinder together. Now you have two seperate things. The cylinder roll and the balloon shape.
4) Now cut short lines at the bottom of the cylinder roll and fold outwards. It should look a bit like a top hat.
5) Make the hole of the balloon roughly the same size as the cylinder and then stick them together with masking tape so that you can paint on top of it.
6) Now get two pieces of scrap paper and fold them over and over again for about four times and then cut the rest off (but leave some extra to tape together). Then fold the edges and tape it to the sides of your greek pottery.
7) Edit your masterpiece. Look through the inside of your pot. If you can see any holes or can see through the newspaper, cover it up with masking tape.
8) Prepare some dark orange paint (to make your greek pottery look ancient like the actual ones) and paint your pot.
9) If your pot wobbles or falls, when it's dry, press it down a little on a table. If it doesn't work, make a base with leftover card as shown in the photo below:
